The Wolf -
Art Prints by
Robert Bateman

Although Romulus and Remus, mythical founders of Rome, were nursed as infants by a she-wolf, the relationship between men and wolves has rarely been peaceful. Historically, there has been no middle ground in human attitudes towards wolves; they have either been feared and hated or loved and admired. Unfortunately, the former attitude has predominated for centuries, with the result that wolves have been ruthlessly exterminated across most of their original range. There never was any reason for it, just superstition and ignorance.

The timber wolf was pushed north to Canada, Alaska and to a few remote areas in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. The buffalo wolf of the Great Plains, largestof the Canis lupus subspecies, was pursued by government trappers until the last animal was killed; no amount of remorse will bring it back. The "lobo" or Mexican wolf, once common in the American Southwest, retreated into the rugged Cordilleras of old Mexico. The red wolf of the southern states, smaller and more colorful than its cousins, survived in scattered colonies, subject to rapid habitat loss and hybridization with coyotes.

Few of us will actually be fortunate enough to see a wolf in the wild, but the knowledge that they are simply there is supremely gratifying. As Sigurd Olson wrote in his classic. The Singing Wilderness, "There was a great satisfaction in knowing that the wolves were in the country, that it was wild enough and still big enough for them to roam and hunt." To stumble across a track in the snow, or to hear its howl split the evening sky - what Olson called "wilderness music, something as free and untamed as there is on this earth" - is to recognize a higher power, and to be thrilled to the very marrow.
