Have you ever encountered a scene that caused you to freeze in your tracks? I mean, a vista that appeared out of nowhere, and was so surprisingly beautiful that it practically stopped your heart? That was exactly my reaction when I first discovered Red Maple.
Not far from my studio in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on a little known path, is this wonderful landscape. The warm morning light, blended with the rich greens, striking crimson and subtle violet tones, set the palette for this major watercolor. The composition is exactly as it appears and except for a leaf or two, no liberties were taken. It almost painted itself.
A generation ago, scenes like this in rural America were common. But, today they are almost an endangered species. So, when one appears, it truly is a rare treasure. I hope that Red Maple will cause you to linger a little longer and reflect a little deeper the next time that unexpected beauty appears in your life.
