Some artists are slow and deliberate painters; others work at a feverish pace. Ellenshaw fits neither category, but painting consistently each day, he is prolific. Each painting poses new challenges, and Ellenshaw perseveres until he has met them all: "In painting," he explains, "as with everything in life, there is a limit to what one can accomplish, to how far one can proceed before reaching that limit. Each of us has our own particular limit, even the great masters. Knowing when to stop, for me, is the moment when I have solved all the parts of the puzzle, at least to the best of my ability, hoping that I may inch forward a little to become a better artist before I die."
